Mixed-media collage 5" x 8"

In this 7-hour class, you will learn how to tell personal stories through creative collage techniques. You will use your own favorite photographs, personal mementos or treasured images of loved ones as the focal point in several collage exercises.

I will demonstrate various ways of starting a collage, preparing backgrounds & surfaces, arranging imagery & text, while building layers of color & transparency. Using my artwork as examples, we will review some basic image transfer techniques, elements of design & color theory. You will learn how to prepare papers & substrates, what glues & adhesives to use, how to transfer images, and how acrylic mediums & paints for glazing & painterly effects can enhance your artwork.

Together, we will explore collage composition, storytelling, and using found objects & personal histories while we spontaneously experiment with creative mixed-media techniques. You will leave with finished artwork, a handout of collage tips, a list of books, resources and links to help jumpstart your personal vision.

Before the workshop date, each registered student will be contacted through a brief series of individual emails. I will personally work with you on how to select and prepare your images, how to plan your work using personal themes, and what to bring to enhance your collages. In time, I hope to replace this with a website resource. Because of this personal attention, the class is strictly limited to 10 students.

The materials fee provides image transfer sheets and the use in class of the following: an assortment of acrylic and metallic paints, glazes, oil pastels and colored pencils, assorted Japanese rice papers, tissue paper, art and handmade papers, Epson inkjet printer/scanner/copier with DuraBrite pigment inks, hair dryers, fixative and acrylic sprays, deli-wrap paper, craft sticks, cotton swabs, and paper towels.
