This special intensive workshop provides the rare opportunity to be immersed in the world of making bath & body products (from scratch) for 4 fun-filled days. During this series, we'll cover 16 different products. You'll learn to make 3 types of body butters (traditional, solid massage bars & exfoliating butter scrubs), spa facial products (facial cleansing grains, facial steaming herbs & clay masks), lip balm, bath melts, solid salt scrubs, light body lotions, emollient shea butter creams, botanical bath salts, exfoliating (liquid, oil-based) salt body scrubs, and 3 types of all-natural perfumes (alcohol-based, oil-based roll-ons & solids). Last but not least, we are very excited about the newest addition to this series... a special class focusing ENTIRELY on packing options & considerations for many types of natural bath & body products (including ALL the products made in this series and then some).

Other than the $150 materials fee, which is paid with cash or check on the first day of class, you don't need to bring anything with you - we supply everything you need! You will go home with thorough handouts for each class, tested and exacting recipes, clear instructions for everything we make, and bunches of finished products. Boot camp students will also receive special extras including a class binder and a frame-worthy personalized certificate of completion for the series.

This intensive is ideal for out-of-town students or those who live near by who would rather take as many classes as they can in a short period of time. This workshop must be purchased as a series. This special series usually fills up well in advance - so sign-up today.

Here are more details about which classes & products are covered in this boot camp:

Day 1 - 10/15/10 - Friday Morning - with Lori Nova
Lip Balm, Bath Melts & Solid Salt Scrubs

lip balm class  bath melts   solid salt scrubs

You may be wondering what on earth these three products have in common?! The answer is that they are all solid oil products: They contain a combination of vegetable, plant, or nut oils and butters (and sometimes beeswax or another type of wax), yet they remain solid at room temperature. You can make all kinds of wonderful solid oil products, and in this class we will focus on three of my favorites.

First, learn to make your own signature non-petroleum Lip Balm (completely from scratch!) that smells so delicious you'll have to warn people not to eat it! We'll discuss the *key* natural ingredients as well as the properties of everything we use. You'll learn the necessary tools and equipment, proper heating methods and order of ingredients, how to properly flavor and color lip balm that your lips will love. I'll also share with you my *secret recipe* and all the tips/tricks to make, package, and label lip balm in a tube.

Next, you'll learn to make Bath Melts. Also known as "Tub Truffles" or "Bath Candy" bath melts are a high-fat treat without the guilt - a solid at room temperature "oil" that slowly melts in your tub (not in your mouth!), enriching & softening the bath water and releasing a wonderful scent. These tiny all-natural treats will make your skin as soft as a baby's bottom. Learn which oils and butters you can use, what other fun ingredients can be added to make fizzy bath melts, how to scent them using pure essential oils, and several ideas for how to creatively mold and package your melts for gift giving.

And finally, you'll learn to make my new favorite product - SOLID Salt Scrubs. These are a very new take on an old favorite - so new in fact that I've only seen them in a handful of boutique stores. Solid scrubs have all the exfoliating benefits of a regular salt scrub without the mess - and less packaging too! Discover this fun new skin care product that you and your friends will love.

You'll leave this class with 2 delicious flavors of all-natural lip balm, 2 luxurious bath melts, 2 solid salt scrubs, and enough information to make all three products on your own at home. Due to the nature of having to make these products in batches, this class is primarily demo-style with hands-on elements. With the exception of beeswax used in one recipe, this class uses only vegan / vegetarian ingredients (no animal products).

Day 1 - 10/15/10 - Friday Afternoon - with Alice Duvernell
Spa Facials: Cleansing Grains, Facial Steams & Clay Masks

clay masks  Natural Spa Facial Products Class in Point Richmond at The Nova Studio (SF Bay Area, Northern CA)  spa facials

CLEANSING GRAINS: A perfect replacement for soap, cleansing grains are mild, nourishing, suitable for all skin types, and can be used daily. The grains massage off dry and dead skin cells, gently cleanse, improve circulation to the facial surface, and provide a nourishing "meal" for your face. See how easy it is to create a superior cleansing product using an inexpensive mixture of biodegradable ingredients.

HERBAL FACIAL STEAMS: A facial steam is the best possible way to deep clean your pores once or twice a month. Each of the herbs we will use is rich in nutrients that nourish and tone the skin. The aromatic oils of the plants are released by the heat and are absorbed by the skin. And best of all, steaming your face over a soup pot of simmering flowers and herbs feels so good! Come and create your own personal facial steam!

CLAY FACIAL MASK: Facials are excellent for stimulating circulation to the skin by drawing blood to the surface. They promote deep pore cleansing and help heal blemishes and acne. Facials also help tone and firm the skin. We'll make one type of facial, a clay mask, which is particularly suitable when one wants a drawing, firming type of facial. Clay is very high in minerals and draws impurities out of the skin. We'll also discuss different types of beneficial herbs and liquids you can mix with the dry clay mixture as well as which essential oils are best suited for your skin type.

You will leave this class with a 3 oz. container of all three products to pamper yourself with. All products made in the class are 100% natural and are not only great for your skin but also environmentally responsible. They are also vegetarian / vegan and contain absolutely NO animal bi-products, perfumes, synthetic ingredients or preservatives.

Day 2 - 10/16/10 - Saturday Morning - with Lori Nova
Botanical Bath Salts & Exfoliating Salt Body Scrubs
Botanical Bath Salts & Body Scrubs Class in Point Richmond at The Nova Studio (SF Bay Area, Northern CA)  bath salts class   exfoliating salt scrub class at the nova studio in pt. richmond (SF Bay Area, Northern California)  salt scrubs

Do you like using luxurious bath products but wish they didn't contain synthetic preservatives & artificial ingredients (and cost a small fortune)? Learn to make your own (affordable) 100% natural bath salts & exfoliating scrubs in this fun, hands-on, workshop. First, you'll learn what HERBAL BATH SALTS are, what goes into them, and how you can make them at home using all-natural ingredients. Learn about all the new/popular types of salt available today and what factors to consider when choosing which type(s) of salt to use. Then you'll customize your salts using pure essential oils for scent (like lavender citrus, cedarwood orange, or double-mint), dried herbs for texture, and clays or other botanicals ingredients for color.

Next, you'll make wonderful EXFOLIATING SALT BODY SCRUBS that you can use in the shower or bath to exfoliate dead skin cells and soften your skin. When finished, you'll feel like you just stepped out of a five-star spa! Learn all about the different types, sizes and textures of salt to use in scrubs, the properties and shelf life of carrier oils, and which botanicals and other fun ingredients you can safely include. You'll customize your scrubs with your favorite essential oil blend that enhances the exfoliating experience with aromatherapy, your choice of exfoliating agents, and herbs / clays for natural color. Popular combinations include Lemon Poppyseed, Peppermint Pumice, and Lime/Spearmint Mojito. Also, learn which antioxidants you can use to extend the shelf-life of your natural products.

Come and see how easy it is to make fabulous all-natural bath salts &
body scrubs for yourself and for gifts that will WOW your recipients!

You will leave this class with helpful handouts, Nova Studio tested recipes, an 8 oz. jar of bath salts and an 8 oz. jar of salt body scrub - all created, made and packaged professionally (by you!) and ready to use or give away as gifts. This class uses only vegan / vegetarian ingredients (no animal products).

Day 2 - 10/16/10 - Saturday Afternoon - with Alice Duvernell
3 Types of Body Butters: Traditional, Massage Bars & Whipped Butters

body butter class  whipped body butter  butters class

In this class, you'll learn how to make three completely different types of wonderful body butters using all-natural ingredients like Shea Butter, Mango Butter, Cocoa Butter, Virgin Coconut Oil, Beeswax, and proven antioxidants. We'll use pure essential oils for their amazing scent, aromatherapy value, and to keep our products 100% natural, as well as discuss options for obtaining colors in your butters naturally. In class, together we'll make 3 different recipes that are made to smooth and soften rough, dry skin:

TRADITIONAL BODY BUTTERS: A high percentage of pure vegetable/nut butters are blended to create a super rich, dense body balm great for commonly dry areas like elbows, knees, cuticles and feet. These are typically packaged in a small jar (because only a small amount is needed) and often sell for up to $10 an ounce.

SOLID BUTTER BARS: These are made using small molds and are held free-form like a bar of soap (a.k.a. "massage bars") or in a push-up stick container for easy application on the go (a.k.a. "lotion bars"). These are applied directly to dry skin (not while in the shower), similar to how/when you would use a body oil.

WHIPPED BUTTERS: These are a wonderful whipped combination of butters, oils & antioxidants that are lighter than "traditional body butters" and are wonderful to use an all over body oil or massage oil. They leave your skin feeling very soft and smooth.

In addition to taking home tested recipes and detailed instructions, you'll leave this class with a 1 oz. jar of traditional body butter (custom scented by you), a chocolate coconut massage bar, and a 2 oz. jar of whipped body butter - all packaged by you and ready to use. Due to the necessity of making these products in batches, this class is primarily demonstration / lecture style, with hands-on elements. With the exception of beeswax used in one recipe, this class uses only vegan / vegetarian ingredients (no animal products).

Day 3 - 10/17/10 - Sunday Morning - with Lori Nova
Light Body Lotions & Shea Butter Creams
lotion making class  cream making class

In this class you'll learn how to make from scratch, wonderful LOTIONS & CREAMS for the body. We'll discuss all necessary ingredients like emulsifiers, humectants, emollients, as well as standard equipment and supplies needed to get started. You'll learn about the properties and shelf-life of vegetable/nut carrier oils and butters (like shea butter and mango butter), and how and when to use antioxidants and preservatives; a necessary part of making lotions and creams as they always contain water-based ingredients. NOTE: Since there are no proven truly "all-natural" preservatives on the market, we do use a synthetic preservative (but it is paraben-free).

I'll demonstrate my two favorite recipes, a nice light body lotion and a wonderful shea butter hand/foot cream. The batches we make in class will be unscented and uncolored and you'll get to add your choice of essential oils, fragrance oils and color. Popular scent combinations include lavender & mint, lemon & rosemary, and geranium, ylang ylang & sweet orange. Once finished scenting and coloring, you will package and label your custom product. Once you take this class, you will never buy commercial lotions or creams again!

You will leave this class with a 3 oz. bottle of body lotion, a 2 oz. jar of shea hand & foot cream, and handouts complete with both of these tested recipes, detailed instructions, information on each of the ingredients, and recommended suppliers. Due to the necessity of making emulsion products in batches, this class is primarily demonstration / lecture style, with hands-on elements. This class uses only vegan / vegetarian ingredients (no animal products).

Day 3 - 10/17/10 - Sunday Afternoon with Joan McCoy
Packaging Your Bath & Body Products
packaging class

You make wonderful handmade products and give them as gifts and/or sell them. What does your current product packaging say about your products? Not only is packaging the first impression of your product, but in many cases the decision to buy or use a product is made ENTIRELY on the packaging. Packaging will attract or repel consumers to or from your products and will also influence the decision to purchase your product again (based on how the product holds up in the chosen container, how good the label looks after it's been in the bathroom for a few months, etc.). How much time have you spent considering how to package your high-quality bath & body formulations?

This class will cover choosing the appropriate packaging for most of bath and body products created at The Nova Studio. “Packaging” is a broad term but we will attempt to cover as much as possible in three hours, including containers, bags, labels, embellishments, and gift packaging. We will cover the "Do’s & Don’ts" of packaging, green or eco-friendly packaging, and market trends. Finally, using other bath & body product makers as examples, we'll examine packaging philosophies, and their trials and triumphs.

This unique class will cover PACKAGING for the following products:
~Soap (Melt & Pour, Cold Process & Hot Process)
~Lotions, Creams & Body Butters
~Lip Balm, Bath Melts & Solid Salt Scrubs
~Fizzy Bath Bombs, Tub Tea & Wash Bags
~Herbal Bath Salts, Salt & Sugar Body Scrubs
~Facial Products (Cleansing Grains, Facial Steams & Facial Masks)
~Perfumes (Roll-Ons, Solids & Sprays)
~Massage Oils, Body Powders, Milk Baths & More!

You will leave this class with a packaging considerations worksheet, packaging container reference spreadsheet, recommended supplier list, catalogs & samples.

Day 4 - 10/18/10 - Sunday Morning & Afternoon with Lori Nova:
3 Types of All Natural Perfumes (aka: Essential Oil Blending)

perfume class  learn to make perfumes class at the nova studio in point richmond, ca (SF Bay Area)  Making Natural Perfumes Class in Point Richmond at The Nova Studio (SF Bay Area, Northern CA)

Come and share in the rich experience of making your own 100% natural perfumes for yourself, family and loved ones. Once you see how easy and fun it is to create your own personalized natural scents, you'll never buy synthetic fragrances again. In this class you'll learn how pure essential oils can be used to create 3 different types of all-natural fragrances:

SPRAY PERFUMES: Most commercial spray perfumes use alcohol as a base to carry the perfume and then evaporate, leaving only the scent behind. We'll make an alcohol-based perfume, similar to what you find in a department store, but without the chemical ingredients.

SOLID SCENTS: Solid perfumes (aka cream perfumes) are made from a combination of wax, carrier oils, and aromatic oils. They can also be moisturizing and softening to the skin. Solid perfumes are also discreet as they scent only you and not the entire room!

ROLL-ONS: Oil-based scents in a handy roller-ball applicator are very easy to make and wear. Roll-on bottles are great - not only are they compact for stashing in your bag or luggage - but they allow you to apply perfume without having to touch it with your fingers.

This class also covers: Basic Perfume Terminology, Essential Oil Blending, Equipment & Supplies, Essential Oil Precautions, 12 Top, 12 Middle & 10 Base Notes, Recipes & Blend Ideas, Sources for Perfume Making Supplies and much more! NOTE: It's a good idea not to wear any scented products on the day of class.

You will leave this class with thorough handouts, which include recipes & instructions, and your 3 custom-scented perfumes: 1/2 oz. solid, 1/3 oz. spray & a 1/3 oz. roll-on. Each of the 3 signature scents you make & take home will be created entirely by you! With the exception of beeswax used in one recipe, this class uses only vegan / vegetarian ingredients (no animal products).
