Friday Night (Optional, additional $65 + $10): Cold Process Soap Making 101
Saturday (Day 1 - Morning): Milk Soaps: 3 Types with Ruth Esteves
Saturday (Day 1 - Afternoon): Soaping with Alternative Liquids with Ruth Esteves
Sunday (Day 2 - Morning): Transparent Soap Making with David Critchfield
Sunday (Day 2 - Afternoon): Liquid Soap Making with David Critchfield
Other than the materials fee, listed above (which is due in cash on the first day of class), you don't need to bring anything with you. You get thorough handouts for each class, tested recipes & instructions and 7 amazing bars & one 8 oz bottle of handmade soap.
DAY 1: SATURDAY MORNING
MILK SOAPS ~3 TYPES: GOAT'S MILK, COCONUT MILK & SOY MILK with Ruth Esteves
Discover the creamy world of milk soaps! When used in place of distilled water, milk is a lovely addition to cold process soap. Many folks consider milk soaps to be milder, more conditioning, and have a creamier lather.
But using milk in cold process soap takes a bit more care. Although they are mostly water, milks also contain proteins, sugars and fats. These components bring beneficial qualities to soap, but they can also make soapmaking a little trickier.
Fear not! This class will take the mystery out of making beautiful milk soaps. We will have 3 hours to explore the various techniques that you can use to incorporate milk into your soaps. This unique next-level class includes:
When all is said and done, you'll have the knowledge & confidence you need to make your own milk soaps at home, including a thorough handout with clear instructions/resources and three full-sized (cured) bars of milk soap, just like the ones made in class.
DAY 1: SATURDAY AFTERNOON
SOAPING WITH ALTERNATIVE LIQUIDS: BEER, COFFEE & JUICE with Ruth Esteves
Getting bored with your cold process soap? Juice it up! Dump the boring distilled water and get turned onto a variety of interesting liquids that can be used to make soap: coffee, tea, juices, beer & wine! Each one can bring something fun and exciting to your handmade soap!
Of course, you always need some kind of liquid to dissolve the sodium hydroxide before making cold process soap, but it doesn’t have to be water. Alternative liquids can bring new (natural) colors, scents and unique qualities to your soap that water just can’t.
In this special "next-level" soapmaking from scratch class, you will:
Each student will take home three full-sized (cured) bars of soap, just like the ones made in class, along with a thorough handout that includes the recipes made in the class and resources for finding ingredients.
DAY 2: SUNDAY MORNING
TRANSPARENT SOAP MAKING (AKA: MAKE YOUR OWN M&P SOAP BASE FROM SCRATCH)
with David Critchfield

Did you know that you can make your own transparent & meltable soaps from scratch? Would you prefer to make your own soap rather than purchase from a store or supplier? Handmade Soaps from scratch, both Cold Process and Hot Process, are naturally opaque (i.e., not see-through), but with a few added ingredients, you can put a unique twist on your handmade soap that will set it apart from the rest.
This experimental class covers a discussion and demonstration on how transparent soap is made. It is important to understand that by sticking with mostly "natural" or "naturally-sourced" ingredients, it's impossible to achieve a very clear, hard bar of soap. Natural-ingredient transparent soaps are always going to be more amber in color, slightly milky (as opposed to crystal clear), and a bit softer than their detergent-based, synthetic counterparts. This class will focus on creating a transparent soap that is as “natural” as possible, but which employs some manmade solvents to achieve transparency. This class will include a discussion about the use of both natural and manmade ingredients in transparent soap and the trade-offs involved.
The making of transparent soap from start to finish takes longer that 3 hours, so parts of the process will be pre-made (where necessary). Each student will take home 1 large bar of soap (in a to-go container) made in the class, to cure at home and handouts which include the recipe made in class, as well as basic instructions.
DAY 2: SUNDAY AFTERNOON
LIQUID SOAP MAKING with David Critchfield

Have you heard? Soap savant David Critchfield has been underground in his soap cave all winter (and spring), working on liquid soap formulations until the wee hours of the morning, and he finally emerged and didn't see his shadow! He's ready to share his method exclusively with students at The Nova Studio!
Ever wonder why not many people make liquid soap when compared to bar soaps? It's because it takes much more time and patience than bar soaps - but the rewards can be great. Finished liquid soaps are relatively inexpensive to make (they are up to 75% water), but careful measurements and quite a bit of patience are required to obtain nice results.
Come learn how to make liquid soap in this 3-hour demonstration and discussion class. We will use the paste method to make a gallon of thick, luscious, liquid soap in a slow cooker (or a crock pot) from plant-based vegetable & nut oils. Because liquid soap cannot be made from start to finish in 3 hours, David will use a batch of paste that was made on a prior day, but show from the beginning how that paste was made. We'll use phenolphthalein to test the pH of our soap and adjust the pH as necessary.
Each student will take home an 8 oz. bottle of freshly made natural liquid soap, which they can custom scent with essential oils. Handouts include the recipe made in class as well as basic instructions.
Disclaimer: Making Liquid Soap is MORE difficult / involved than making bar soap.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
This entire boot camp is designed for
students who have taken our Cold Process 101 Soap Class OR who have experience making cold process soap (successfully) on
their own. If you have never made cold process (CP) soap
before, you will need to take our Cold Process 101 Soap Class which demonstrates
soapmaking using a 4-pound batch and teaches all
the lye safety & other basics needed for a beginner. Also, this is an age 18+ class since making soap from scratch involves working with lye (aka sodium hydroxide). Even though most of this boot camp is demonstration style (the best & safest way we know to teach it), there are some hands-on elements. Please wear or bring a long-sleeved shirt. You'll also need rubber gloves and safety goggles. There will be several pairs of goggles and gloves to share, but if you prefer your own please bring them to class.
This special weekend intensive is ideal for out-of-town students or those who live near by but work during the week and would like to learn all they can about making fantastic soap in one weekend. Due to the nature of making soap from scratch, these classes are mainly demonstration style (the best and safest way we know how to teach it so you feel confident doing it at home).
