Day 1: Friday - 9am-1pm
Handmade Hydrosols (Distillate Waters)

The word hydrosol comes from the Latin root “hydro” and “sol” which means “water solution.” When a plant is distilled to obtain an essential oil, many chemical compounds of the plant first build up in the water. A hydrosol is the distillate water that remains under the thin layer of essential oil after the steaming process. Hydrosols contain many of the same beneficial components of essential oils, but in a much more subtle, gentle way. Once made, they are ready to use and are suited to a wide range of skin types, particularly sensitive ones. They are also safe for use in baby and pet products and deliver a wonderful range of therapeutic and cosmetic qualities.
In this unique class, you will learn how you can make your very own hydrosol at home (without special distillation equipment) from scratch using readily available cooking tools. You will experience the marvelous aromas, as well as the soothing, moisturizing and cooling effects of hydrosols. The class will focus on 6 very beneficial hydrosols (Chamomile, Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary, Geranium & Rose), their properties, and their many uses in skin care. All of the plants used in the class are available locally, and you will develop an awareness of what can be easily grown in your own garden or purchased at convenient neighborhood resources.
Alice will cover the following as she demonstrates how to
make a 20 ounce batch of hydrosol using her unique method:
NOTE: Due to the nature of making hydrosols from scratch (in batches), this class is mainly demonstration style with some hands-on elements. THIS IS NOT A CLASS ON HOW TO MAKE ESSENTIAL OILS.
You will take home thorough handouts and knowledge to make great hydrosols and hydrosol-based cosmetics from scratch as well as a 4-oz. glass bottle (with spray top) of freshly made hydrosol.
Day 1: Friday - 2-5pm
Botanical Extracts: Infusions, Tinctures & Glycerites

In this demo & hands-on class you will be learning the fundamentals of herbal extractions in oil, alcohol & glycerin. These processes are very accessible and will give you the knowledge to work from scratch with the plants to a finished product. Extracts are sold everywhere and are often highly priced: green tea extract (anti-oxidant, used in anti-wrinkle creams), calendula infused oil (soothing in massage bars or baby products), comfrey or lavender tinctures (excellent for problematic skin types). We will discuss a range of cosmetic herbs and uses and how these basic products will enhance your beauty lines and insure quality to your customers. Come and enjoy the wonders of plant crafting with Alice Duvernell at The Nova Studio!
You will take home helpful handouts, an 8 ounce oil extraction, an 8 ounce glycerin extraction and a 1 ounce herbal tincture. Students who make other bath & body products will be able to take their extracts home for use in their formulations. All products made in this class are 100%
NATURAL (they are free from
synthetic ingredients and chemical preservatives).
Day 2: Saturday - 9am-12:30pm
Nourishing Face Creams

(Suggested Prerequisite: Our Lotions & Creams 101 Class or the eClass Handouts)
In this mostly demo-style class, you will learn Alice's method for creating high-quality facial creams. You will be introduced to amazing rejuvenating and healing carrier oils from all over the world, and also hydrosols (distillate waters from plants), essential oils, and different types of herbal extracts.
Learn which types of waxes and emulsifiers can be used in cosmetic crafting, rules of hygiene, preserving agents and how to make your creams unique to the market. Alice Duvernell, cosmetic designer and teacher will share with you the great pleasures and challenges of creating superior facial products that you and your customers will never forget.
You will take home helpful handouts and two amazing freshly-made facial creams (made in class), one in a 1-oz. airless pump bottle & one in a 1-oz. jar.
Day 2: Saturday - 1:30-5pm
Formulating for Skin Conditions
During this investigative demo and hands-on class, you will be introduced to the top “Botanical Foods” used in cosmetic formulations targeting particular skin conditions. As we know, skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis are highly related to the dysfunction of internal organs, stress or inappropriate food habits. Nevertheless, properly made skincare products can help relieve and soothe these uncomfortable and often unsightly skin problems.
In this new and unique class, Alice will introduce you to a wide range of traditional and unusual botanical extracts, essential oils, and other natural ingredients that have the ability to make our skin feel and look better. Some of the conditions we will study include Acne & Blemishes, Eczema, Chronic Dryness and Flakiness, Psoriasis, Scaring and Rosacea.
Please note that these problematic conditions are not always curable from the outside, but most people can alleviate the bothersome symptoms by using certain beneficial ingredients. This class will also cover which products and ingredients to AVOID, which in some cases can even cure the problem altogether.
You will take home informative handouts, a (custom) 1/3-oz. roll-on Blemish Buster, a (custom) 2-oz Recovery Gel & a 1-oz Dry Skin Stick in a push-up container.
Day 3: Sunday - 9am-12:30pm
Exfoliating Cleansers, Toners & Facial Oils

EXFOLIATING CLEANSERS
We will create a soap-free cleanser using all-natural ingredients. You will be introduced to the use of excellent quality cleansing and softening clays, botanicals, natural grains & powdered milks (optional). The finished product will be dry (so we can keep it synthetic & preservative-free) and you also learn all about different "wetting agents" that can be added for additional benefit to the skin.
TONERS
Once your skin is cleansed, a toner is used to balance, hydrate, soothe and restore elasticity to your skin. In some cases, a toner will also act as an astringent, tightening the pores. Many store-bought toners contain synthetic preservatives, but Alice will show you how to make a natural facial toner, using a variety of herbally-infused ingredients such as decoctions & tinctures as well as skin-friendly ingredients like aloe vera & honey (optional, can eliminate if you are vegan).
FACIAL ELIXIRS / OILS
The final step in the process is applying some sort of moisturizer or facial oil to nourish your now beautiful, clean & glowing skin! You'll make your very own customized aromatherapy face oil (also known as a "facial elixir") to soften your skin and continue to feed it with specialty carrier oils & essential oils, carefully chosen specifically for your skin type.
You will take home helpful handouts, a 4-oz. jar of exfoliating facial cleanser, a 4-oz. bottle facial toner, and a 1-oz. facial elixir/oil in a glass dropper.
Day 3: Sunday - 1:30-5pm
Luxury Facial Serums

In this unique hands-on and demo class, learn how to create your own luxury facial serums. Serums are a very popular product in the cosmetic industry today. They are used most commonly at night, and their purpose is to nourish the skin deeply with precious ingredients.
What is also amazing in making facial serums is that the process does not require any warm phases (like lotions & creams); it is a no-heat process that enables all of the properties of heat sensitive botanicals and carrier oils to stay intact.
In this section of the bootcamp, you will learn how to make gel-based facial serums to help regenerate and heal the skin. Alice will present different gel forms and discuss how to use natural gums as jellifying agents. She will demo how to make the serum and then invite you to customize it with high quality essential oils that you can choose, based on your skin type.
Throughout the class, you will be introduced to the techniques on how to incorporate precious hydrosols (distillate waters from plants), essential oils, infused herbs and different types of herbal extracts. You will learn properties of the different carrier oils (like which are anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, nourishing, etc.) and find out how to properly preserve your serums.
You will take home informative handouts & a 1 oz. customized gel-based serum in an airless pump bottle.

ABOUT THE TEACHER:
Alice Duvernell is an artist & gilder who recently moved to the Bay Area after living in the south of France for the past 8 years. There she started researching problematic & sensitive skin types & developed an interest in the amazing virtues of essential oils & hydrosols. Her interest in culture & her studies in anthropology led her to travel in South America where she expanded her passion & awareness in native medicinal plants. During her last journey to Brazil, she set up a laboratory where she shared with the locals her techniques for making hydrosols & other cosmetics, using native plants. Alice lives in Point Richmond & has been teaching at The Nova Studio since July, 2007.
